Volunteer Firefighter Information

Volunteer firefighters are an integral part of the Corvallis Fire Department. The Department maintains a roster of volunteers who augment the ranks of the career personnel and assist with fire suppression, rescue services, emergency medical care, and fire prevention.

The Fire Department has three volunteer programs designed to allow individuals to match their skills and time with the needs of the City and the Rural Fire Protection District:

Community Volunteers live within the City or Rural District and are assigned to a shift and station, spending time each month in the fire station with career personnel. This situation is well suited for individuals who wish to reside in their own homes while serving their community and gaining valuable and marketable skills and experience. Duties and expectations include:

• Volunteering a minimum of 14 shift hours each month.
• Attending Tuesday night Volunteer Drill.
• Responding to Station 1 on first or greater alarms to assist career staff.
• EMT certification is not required; however, the Corvallis Fire Department will provide reimbursement for tuition, books, and the cost of the initial testing fee upon receipt of certification.

Resident Volunteers maintain their assigned station as their primary residence and work shifts with career personnel. Resident volunteers receive free lodging in their assigned fire station. This is often an ideal situation for OSU, LBCC, and Chemeketa students. Duties and expectations include:

• Volunteering a minimum of 120 shift hours per month, as scheduled with the Lieutenant.
• Attending Tuesday night Volunteer Drill.
• EMT certification is not required; however, the Corvallis Fire Department will provide reimbursement for tuition, books, and the cost of the initial testing fee upon receipt of certification.

Rural Resident Volunteers maintain the Locke Fire Station (Corvallis Rural Fire Protection District Station in the Lewisburg area) as their primary residence and are trained as Firefighter/Apparatus Operators. Rural Resident Volunteers receive free lodging in the Locke Fire Station and are eligible for financial assistance to help defray educational costs through the CRFPD Locke Scholarship Program. This, too, is an ideal situation for students. Duties and expectations include:

• Volunteering a minimum of 168 shift hours per month, as scheduled with the Lieutenant.
• Attending Tuesday night Volunteer Drill.
• Obtaining EMT certification within 12 months of start date. Reimbursement may be available through CRFPD.
